Halifax –
The Association of Nova Scotia University Teachers (ANSUT) is pleased to announce that Robert Scott Stewart, Ph.D., Professor of Philosophy at Cape Breton University, has accepted the position of president for the organization. Stewart’s one-year term begins July 1, 2017.
“ANSUT provides a vital and vigorous voice for academic staff at Nova Scotia Universities,” says Stewart. “We can use that voice to ensure that the government realizes both the importance of post-secondary education in Nova Scotia, and the need to fund it adequately so Nova Scotia can continue as a leader in post-secondary education while providing affordable and accessible education.” Stewart believes that ANSUT is representative of high quality university education in Nova Scotia, and looks forward to working with local NS faculty associations, ANSUT councillors and the ANSUT executive to pursue various research projects on the state of post-secondary education in the province.
Stewart is a Professor of Philosophy at Cape Breton University, where he has worked for 27 years. His research is eclectic and covers ethics, applied philosophy, philosophy and literature, and the philosophy of sex and love. He has published three books, and more than 40 academic papers, as well as numerous book reviews, and has given more than 100 talks at conferences and universities in North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. He has worked for the Cape Breton University Faculty Association for more than 20 years serving as a Member-at-Large, Treasurer, Negotiating Team Member, Chief Grievance Officer, Vice President, and President. He has been involved with ANSUT for more than 10 years as a CBUFA representative, Secretary, and Vice President.
Stewart replaces outgoing president, Marc Lamoureux, Ph.D., of Saint Mary’s University, who led the organization for the last six years.
