One-third of all Canadian university teachers are hired on part-time or short-term contracts. What does this mean for your work-life, the education of our young people and the future of our universities. And how is this linked to other disturbing trends in post-secondary education — underfunding, corporatization, the erosion of academic freedom? Are our universities — and the people who work for them — moving closer and closer to the edge?
We have brought together a top-notch panel of experts to discuss these and other issues related to the precarity of our universities:
- Karen Foster, Dahousie University sociologist and author of a major research report on precarious academics in Nova Scotia.
- Sylvia Fuller, Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of British Columbia, specializing in work, labour, inequality and gender issues.
- David Robinson, Executive Director of the Canadian Association of University Teachers and a vocal advocate for the rights of academic workers.
The panel will be moderated by Claire McIlveen, journalist, columnist, and union activist who has been on strike against the Chronicle-Herald for more than six months.
Time: Thursday, October 27, 7-9 pm
Place: Sobey School of Business, Saint Mary’s University, Scotiabank auditorium, 923 Robie Street, Halifax.
